I did my own tea party, I purchased a bag of asphalt and fixed the street in front of my drive way. The city of Tucson is short of cash and maybe my asphalt will keep a cop employed for a day or two, or keep a teacher. all that happened with that tea party was a lot of media attention and over time for cops while they need to be on streets looking for criminals and not tea bagging speeders. Taxes pay for services.

you know that original tea part happened because wealth English men were imposing their well on poor Americans. I sometimes think that wealth people are imposing their wills on us by not supporting schools but they are more than willingly to support jails.

We should be sending our young children to prison now the ratio of controlling individuals to inmates is better in a prison and all they have to do is control the uncontrolable, like the arizona legislature.

SO WHEN THEESE PEOPLE MARCH DOWN TOWN, I DO NOT SUPOPORT THEM BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE ENOUGH MONEY, THAT THEY DO N OT WORK. AND DON'T WANT TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY, AND DON'T CARE FOR THE REST OF US THAT DO.

In times like these many people discover just how worthless their college degrees are. It's a good idea to learn a skill that will always be in demand and be willing to get your hands dirty if that's what it takes to make a living. Right now, a good handyman can make a fortune if he's reliable, reasonable and available.

Good decisions are not made when everyone is in panic mode. Taking a job without researching your strong points and innate skills is a sure way to end up in a job you hate. Do you really want to answer phones all day long? Is that any kind of existence for anyone with an IQ higher than 85? Or how about the spirit-numbing task of assembly line work at Ventana? Pitched as "cutting-edge" medical innovations, what you would do is "put screw A in hole B" all, day, long. As far as Target, working retail has got to be one of the most demeaning methods of earning a living that exists in America today. Not only do you have to put up with bitchy customers all day, the store expects you to "respect" and "put the customer first" when all you want to do is strangle some of them. When not "serving" your customers, you will be required to dust shelves, open heavy boxes, stock shelves, sweep up, and pretend you give a damn about whether the huge corporation "makes plan."
I guess what I am saying is, don't take just any job. Find something you are interested in first, find the companies that do that, then go after them.

The point of this story is that without "college degrees", job seekers lack the skill set to apply for the available jobs. With our repub state's drastic education cuts, our only continues real growth will be the lines at DES and the prison population.

The only good jobs in Tucson require and education. How good an idea is it to reduce support of education in order to bring in low paying jobs.

Build up the schools, so that well educated, good paying employees and employers what to be here to extend their educations, families, and employment.

This state has declined for 20 years because of the path the Rep legislature has taken concerning education.

The typical well paid employee in Tucson, was not educated in Arizona.

But we Have money for prisons, which appear to be the legislatures growth industry, and even the employees there must have an education.

Short of putting cameras and monitoring personnel in every domicile with kids, there is no way to prevent child abuse through government intervention.

#3,4: I understand what Fitz is trying to say, but as #2 points out, child abuse is a parenting issue and government can't make bad parents good and thus it's not a political issue per se. CPS at it's existing levels of funding was horribly dysfunctional with plenty of kids dying who were supposedly being monitored by CPS as well as some kids dying while supposedly being safe in foster care.
Sadly, CPS's track record didn't stop many children from being "hit hard" or worse even in the best of times. And watching that CPS supervisor on the stand in that trial saying she DID NOT CARE made my blood boil. Put her in box in a storage shed and see if she cares then.

you know figure this one out, the legislature rep for district 26 does not want to kill animals so he will figure out how to tax us to save cats and dogs.
The legislature will allow us to be taxed to support millionaire ball players and their owners.
The major growth business in So Az is prisons, up 6% this year while schools are down.
The legislature will work with lobbyist to introduce new and improved payday loans.
But they sit in a closed room (closet) and starve DES/CPS. they do not support families or family values.
Fitz did not make the situation direct enough.

Ah, yes. Leave it to Fitz to keep things simple with the simple message: Republicans bad, Democrats good. Must be true if it's in a cartoon, the ultimate in depth analysis. Whether your child does good in school, like some kids in recent stories, or whether they do poorly or average all depends on the legislature which has WRECKED their chances to learn forever and wrecked their very lives. At least this is what I'm led to think by this cartoon.

education in Arizona is almost equivalent to Mexico. The only reason we have a rating in the 50 states is the fact there are only 50.
Who would come to Arizona with an education if they had children to educate even if they could find a good jobs. A poor education system equals a poor job market. Arizona spends 1/3 less per student than the national average. It isn't just the schools it is the support given from all areas.
Arizona will receive 220,000,000 for education, how will the state legislature figure out to feed their cronies and take it away from children's needs.
All they see this state needing is another version of payday loans, and legal theft of the poor working class.

Arizona's per-pupil expenditure:1981-1982 $5,955 US ranking = 6th1986-1987 $6,309 US ranking = 31st1996-1997 $5,705 US ranking = 47th2006-2007 $6,248 US ranking = 50th
No - that isn't a typo. We spent $61 less per student in 2007 than we did 20 years ago.

From what I see the state has not wrecked the education system, it has just not taken care of the system and let it wither on the vine.
Fitz could of done a better toon with the Leg setting in a chair and the school covered with vines in a deteriorated condition, but then that would take more thought then I know Fritz usually puts into his toons.
Been there several times Fritz when you did things on the fly and just as good as this.

#5, Joan, I agree with you, but they are taking all the money they can and dictating how to speed the rest. I think technology would be considered administrative costs by the legislature.
Taxes should not be raised right now, but a tax cut never educated a child, or paved a road. These characters in the legislature, and the gov should be talking to Kyle and McCain and telling them to vote for state money.
When you consider the GNP went down 4% last quarter and this legislation is barely 5% of the GNP, it is worth the investment.
A tax cut never helped someone without a job.
Oh well many of my posts have disappeared lately, but at least I wrote a comment.

Hey Gov Brewer; I have lived here all but 2 months of my 55 years, pd taxes etc etc.
My employer does not offer health Insurance. I would be willing to pay for MY self but I cannot afford 600-800 per month for the Insurance policy.
I make to much to qualify for AHCCCS thus I wish I was 1 out of 6 eligible for AHCCCS.
So give us a break with that politician rah rah stuff

#11, Tom D., Tom, I feel really, really bad for you. However, I must say that I do not understand why it becomes my RESPONSIBILITY to provide your healthcare because of the choices you have made over your 55 years of life.
What many fail to understand is that inflation is a result of the actions of Congress. Congress has chosen to involve itself in many areas and they are the cause of inflation; therefore, healthcare and higher education has become too expensive for many to afford. And think, these are too areas where government has involved itself the most.
Not only that, look at all the advancements that have been made in healthcare over the past couple of decades. These advances do not come cheap and these costs must be passed on to the consumer.

AHCCCS saved my son’s life. He was diagnosed with a tumor on his pituitary gland. He was a surveyor working for a small company with no employer provided health care available. He made the decision to eat and pay rent rather than to spend 75% of his income for private health care insurance (some here have suggested this was somehow an option). He was forced to quit his job and become indigent and penniless so that he could qualify for AHCCCS. This process took nearly a year. Fortunately the tumor did not grow fast or he would be dead. If he had health coverage when he was diagnosed he could have returned to work and become a taxpayer again a year sooner. He would not have required the food stamps and other State aid he got during the time he was indigent. His care could have cost less if the tumor had been treated earlier. In the end the State spent more for his care than it should have. At least he lived.

Here's an update for everyone. The labels of conservative, liberal, democrat and republican are pretty much meaningless these days.
You look at the budget deficits that the "conservative"/republican president has given us year after year and it seems ludicrous to call out democrats/liberals for not being fiscally responsible.
Then you have the suposedly liberal/democrat Obama saying that religion should play a bigger part of government than most in his party.
All I am saying is that it is just stupid to attack one party or the other. Or one ideology or the other. You can only really attack one candidate or office holder.
In this case, as a Democrat, I think Brewer is being much more realistic than Napolitano concerning our statewide economic difficulties. Just as I think Obama will be better than Bush at handling the federal economic crisis.
Or am I only allowed to like the office holders of one party or the other?

One major difference between Janet Napolitano and Jan Brewer is that Janet Napolitano was twice elected by the voters of Arizona to serve as our governor.
Jan Brewer, on the other hand, was not elected to this post.
It seems to me that she is speaking as if the people of this state elected her. She is speaking as if we have actually given her permission to aggressively force her extreme ideology on us. And she does have this power, structurally speaking.
But she was not elected to the role she was in. (online forums, by the way, are not the same as democratic elections).
So myself personally, I would think that someone in that situation -- located as governor but not elected to the position, with an election coming up in a couple of years -- would be better off showing some humility and being positioned more to listen to the people of this state.
Instead, Ms. Brewer announces right away that she knows best, that her ideology is the best ideology, that she is going to use that ideology to govern, and that listening to us, the people of the state, is not a priority for her.
That's a lot of arrogance for someone who was not even elected to her post! Power without permission or accountability ... I suppose that's part of her ideology too?
I think it's a good thing that this is democracy and we have elections. This un-elected governor can't do this for more than 2 years without actually seeking the permission of the people. Given the mood of this nation and what is to come, I suspect that the 2010 elections won't go so well for her if she keeps this up.

#11 Tom, no one will read this it is too late in the evening, but I will right this anyway.
you know I am almost 60, and have lived in Arizona all but about 4 months, not including a couple of vacations to California and such. When I was young we did not go to deep into Mexico, even when we lived within 5 miles of the border because my dad was afraid of the situations there. We went to Nogalas and Naco, but now I would not even go there.
But that is not the reason am writing. I was fortunate that I could work in the mines when I was in my late teens and that paid for me to go to University. I was fortunate that In worked for a big company and had health care.
But I will tell you, that things are different now, the state expects everyone to go into debt and supports nothing. If you want to go to college, the state does not help, but will sell your debt for student loans to the highest bidder.
As for medical care, let's just say that business get tax breaks but no incentives to take care of their employees.
So with that said, lets hope they stop thinking so much about bankers and more about people on the street, people working and doing no harm.

PHOENIX — Arizona's next governor said she's prepared to do what she believes the incumbent is not: say "no." Jan Brewer said one reason Arizona is in its current financial mess is that the state kept expanding the services provided even as tax collections could not keep pace.
"That is the result of the governor and the Legislature not being realistic," she said. "Irresponsibility and mismanagement has got us into this problem," with policymakers apparently unwilling or unable to tell constituents that the state just can't afford what they want.
Brewer is set to become governor Wednesday afternoon, assuming incumbent Janet Napolitano is confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the head of the Department of Homeland Security. Brewer has promised to sketch out her vision for the state in an inaugural speech.
But in an interview with Capitol Media Services, the governor-in-waiting provided a glimpse of her principles.
"I'm a fiscal conservative," Brewer said.
"I don't believe government should be huge," she said. "And I don't believe that government should do things for us that we can do ourselves."
Brewer takes office with $1.6 billion in red ink this year and projections of a $3 billion deficit next year out of a $9.9 billion budget. Yet various groups are lining up to keep their programs alive.
Arizonans "in total denial"
Brewer said they're not being realistic.
"I think the people of the state of Arizona, the people of the business community, the people in general, including some legislators, are in total denial of what this problem is and just how big it is," Brewer said. She said someone needs to tell voters that cuts are going to have to be made, even to popular programs.
"We would be in denial if we sat here and said we're going to solve this without making cuts in education," she said. State aid to schools currently consumes about $4.2 billion.
That is in sharp contrast to the policies of Napolitano, whose budget proposes adding more than $200 million.
The difference, Brewer said, is that she has a more limited image of what government should be doing than the woman she will replace.
Brewer said government has "certain responsibilities" to provide services that are generally not left to individuals. That includes educating children, building and maintaining roads, and public safety.
And it does include health care, "in some instances."
That's one contrast between Brewer and Napolitano that shows up in high relief.
As a state legislator in 1993, Brewer complained about the growth of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, the state's Medicaid program. At that time, the program had about 470,000 people enrolled, or one in nine residents.
"It just keeps eating at us like a cancer, almost," she said at the time. "It will never be satisfied."
AHCCCS enrollment now exceeds more than 1.1 million, close to one out of every six residents.
At least part of the reason for that, though, is voters expanded eligibility, providing free care to anyone below the federal poverty level. That comes out to about $21,200 a year for a family of four.
Brewer declined to say whether she believes that AHCCCS had grown too big, calling that "a loaded question."
But Brewer said she opposes Napolitano's efforts to expand a related program known as Kids-Care, which provides nearly free care to the children of parents who make up to twice the poverty level. Napolitano sought not only to push that to three times the poverty level but also backed proposals to have the government provide coverage for all children, as well as some form of universal health care. "The bottom line is that we cannot provide all kinds of health care to all the people of the state of Arizona," Brewer said. "We cannot afford it."
Brewer said she's not saying Arizona must do everything on a pay-as-you go basis.
As a legislator, for example, she backed borrowing for construction of the new west campus of Arizona State University. "That was good for the state," said Brewer, who represented the Glendale area.
But Brewer said she's not willing to do short- or long-term borrowing — concepts in Napolitano's budget proposals — solely to keep programs alive.
"If you're thinking that we're going to borrow ourselves out of this crisis that we're in, that isn't going to happen," she said. "It's borrowing that got us into the crisis that we're in."
Brewer said she's not absolutely wedded to her limited register of what government should do.
"After good policy and good debate, then I think we can add things to that list, if it's necessary — and we can afford it," she said

Brewer realizes the important differences between the state and federal governments. The state cannot print money while the federal treasurer can and is. The state can only tax for the money it needs, and if it borrows it cannot pay itself back, we must.

I hear what you are saying, Alan. But, we know what Brewer is going to do. We need more revenue in this state to keep education and basic heath care for children off the chopping block.
Some suggestions:
Increase the taxes on tabacco and distilled spirits
Impose an excise tax on auto sales of vehicles costing over $30,000
Impose a real estate transfer tax on sales over $1,000,000
Create another tax bracket in the state income tax over $350,000 and tax at 5%
Encourage clean energy technologies and work to attract those industries. This could be a real boom for Arizona.

#11, Tom D., Tom, I feel really, really bad for you. However, I must say that I do not understand why it becomes my RESPONSIBILITY to provide your healthcare because of the choices you have made over your 55 years of life.
What many fail to understand is that inflation is a result of the actions of Congress. Congress has chosen to involve itself in many areas and they are the cause of inflation; therefore, healthcare and higher education has become too expensive for many to afford. And think, these are too areas where government has involved itself the most.
Not only that, look at all the advancements that have been made in healthcare over the past couple of decades. These advances do not come cheap and these costs must be passed on to the consumer.

"Irresponsibility and mismanagement" is at the root of the problem for sure. Not to mention fraud and malfeasance. But these things occurred in the corporations, not the government. We are in a potentially catastrophic situation that can only be addressed by government intervention, not by government dissolution. The "fiscal conservatives" got us into this fiscal trap by encouraging the corporations to rip us off while cutting away at the tax base during the bubble. Now they are planning to pull the rug out from under us by cutting away what little safety net there is left.

Anyone willing to look at the facts must realize that without a national health care plan such as most other civilized countries have adopted to their particular needs, we're never going to get out of the financial hole that a decent level of health care digs for us.
A national health care system works wonderfully well in other countries such as Canada and most of the European countries. It's not socialism and it's not nearly as expensive as our present system of commercial health care. Let's check it out without prejudice.

Thank goodness. Brave lady since she knows that the AZ Republic and ADS will demonize her for it.
First thing she can do is uphold fully Prop 200 we passed a few years back. We voted with over 66% majority to withold ALL state services for non US citizens. Gov Napolitano decided to exclude Medicaid for that, and a few other programs.
That should cut things a bit.
The problem is the ER and public schools. Those are "free lunches" to anyone.

Despite the conventional images both the Republican and Democratic parties have, as “we the people” have seen, things don’t always pan out the way us voters would have hoped. Our last Republican administration re-defined deficit spending in direct contrast to the party platform. Personally, I don't feel wholly represented by any party. Let’s hope that Jan Brewer will be able to slash spending.
I’m not a socialist, so I don’t believe government should pay for healthcare. However, government can regulate the health care crisis by addressing tort reform, capping tort awards, redefining when lawsuits are appropriate or not, and mandating insurance premium cuts (both patient and practitioner) commiserate with those caps. The drug prices could be addressed by changing the patent process. I compare the current patent processes with a greedy monopoly. A patent holder should be able to charge a capped percentage to others to produce a drug, so research costs could be recovered and profited from, but this ability to exclusively price a drug for a time period is unfair.
Ms. Brewer has a mess to unravel. Good luck.

More revenue for this state means more jobs, an environment that will bring jobs to AZ. We need more companies to move to AZ, which may mean some tax breaks too. We cannot continue to tax the unemployed. We need some new ideas that will attract new high tech companies to this state. Arizona cannot balance a budget from new cameras covering the state either. So revenues for the state and cities, need to come from new corporations moving here, creating new jobs, paying a decent wage. Does Arizona have anyone recruiting new jobs?

People have to realize that governm,ent cannot pay for everything. SOmeone above mentioned that they could not afford health care. Remember that is a choice. You make money, you choose to buy what you want . If healthcare is one you don't want ot pay for, its your choice. Don't complain because of your choices. Anybody here use the VA system? That is the template we could expect for national health care. My dad is a combat veteran of two wars, who first couldn't get care because the VA couldn't locate his records (funny, he can still locate his uniform!). Once they got him qualified, he gave up on them because they refused to provide a doctor who spoke intelligible English! National health care? Yeah, that'll work!

So we cut out all these people (many working poor) on access. Then what? They get sick, go to the emergency room. Go broke. Don't pay, Then we pay twice as much long term as insuring them. Furthermore, nobody is aware of any national health care proposal, only instead to increase the pool of insured and thus lowering preminums to everybody else because a greater pool can be created among various private insurance companies.

Let's hope she doesn't seek the balance the budget by increasing those pesky photo radar vans on the interstates!
I go to Phoenix weekly and two times I've had "close calls" with accidents, as people ahead of me hit their brakes, while others changed lanes. It was like a domino effect and when I saw all the cars slamming on their brakes, I KNEW a photo van had to be ahead. Sure enough!
I'm all for a DPS officer sitting in the median with his radar taking out those yahoos that go 85, 90+ on I-10. But thee mindless "Robo Radar" vans sit on the side of the road, surprise people with bright flashes, and generally are more of a traffic hazard than the occasional leadfoot.
I fully support the red light radar, as it's a passive system that doesn't affect traffic. I'd even support photo radar to catch speeders if it were a passive system, mounted up on a pole beside an exit sign, or something, and was not sitting right alongside the highway causing drivers to react, often rashly.
Someday there's going to be a big pile-up of cars caused by a photo radar van, and perhaps then the state will do a body count and see if the extra dollars are worth it.

BUT, I do know the folks up north come to Washington State for a lot of their health care and pay for it when they can. Think of available cash in the hands of citizens as a "Community Resource." A wise governor will husband that resource.
That means ALL expenditures by everybody are part of that Community Resource INCLUDING Utility Bills.

Brewer said government has "certain responsibilities" to provide services that are generally not left to individuals. That includes educating children, building and maintaining roads, and public safety.
Lets hope that our state legislators get this message! They've already proposed cutting the education budget by almost $1 billion. If Arizona wants to attract high tech industries we'd better be able to offer an educated work force. I'll be watching to see how sincere she is in carrying out her policy of supporting education. I sure hope she is sincere. If she is she may end up vetoing more bills that Janet Napolitano did.

So God is going to balance the budget for us. I feel better now.
And the improvements to ASU’s facilities were in Glendale, Jan’s district. Of course she supported funding for projects in her district.

7.2% on umemployment benefits, 13.5% total unemployed when one considers the total of those on benefits and those whom have exhausted them, during FDR's tenure unemployment ranged from a low of 14% to a high of 25%, we have 1/3 more people in America today, so statistically we have more unemployed today than in 1st great depression, guess one can debate whom is right or wrong on any issue, but seems to me, we as a nation are headed for some inevitable and unavoidable days ahead, of misery, poverty, homelessness on the scale we have not seen since the 1930's, guess many will be whining, moaning and groaning on right and left of the political spectrum as they stand in these unemployment, welfare, food stamp, section 8 housing application lines blaming one political party or another almost like people whom favor one sports team over another, it merely is whom they like the best, of course there will be those unlucky ones homeless living in the depression era type tent cities, and misery will not care if your a republican, democrat, conservative, liberal, socialist! In fact great irony is republicans came out of the closet as "socialists" in 2008 when they bailed out Wall Street with free money no pay back schedule, and exposed themselves once and for all as socialist for the rich tycoons on Wall Street and when the blue collar workers of auto industry sought help they got a loan, with pay back schedule, no free money for them, no bail out, only difference between a republican and democrat today is republicans believe in socialism for the rich, and democrats believe in socialism for the poor and middle class! As to the moaning and groaning on any internet site, it always has both sides views, one can take what ever side one wishes, but this 2nd great depression is already making millionares paupers as in the Madoff Ponzi scheme to the tune of $50 billion, and now a absconded Florida financier off with $350 million of his investors money, reports of up to 34 existing ponzi scheme tycoons on Wall Street making off with the rich folks money! We see the justice for rich and poor, a man whom steals $50 billion sits in his penthouse, and the poor thief who stole $100 sits in a jail! AHCCCS saved my son’s life. He was diagnosed with a tumor on his pituitary gland. He was a surveyor working for a small company with no employer provided health care available. He made the decision to eat and pay rent rather than to spend 75% of his income for private health care insurance (some here have suggested this was somehow an option). He was forced to quit his job and become indigent and penniless so that he could qualify for AHCCCS. This process took nearly a year. Fortunately the tumor did not grow fast or he would be dead. If he had health coverage when he was diagnosed he could have returned to work and become a taxpayer again a year sooner. He would not have required the food stamps and other State aid he got during the time he was indigent. His care could have cost less if the tumor had been treated earlier. In the end the State spent more for his care than it should have. At least he lived.

If you check out the Parks & Rec page for Tucson you will notice it provides school credit, delinquency prevention, and a place for teenagers to go. If you've attended even one performance of "Keepin' It Real" like I did, you would see these are not the kids who tag or graffiti where you and I normally see it on the street. These kids do it as an artform in private for sharing with friends, on pieces that moveable like cardboard or giant poster boards- not walls. Also if you attend or look into it, you will see this program offers kids poetry, dancing, and crafts which get them off the street- if it would attract the kids who are on the street tagging, then we would see a magical cure.
The COT offering classes for graffiti art isn't the problem. Kids already have access to tagging and spray paint long before these classes came around. They happen in almost every city in every state in the country. One writer bucking for an investigate, lopsided story in the Star does not equal a problem. Just spend an afternoon with those kids and you'll know.

Brewer is abolutely right - our federal government should take a lesson from her. Government is supposed to supply those things which we citizens cannot: highways, bridges, fire and police protection.
We got into this mess with too many wish-lists that we cannot afford. It's time to cut back and that means some education cuts as that's where most of our budget lies.

I have two points here.
1. I went to college and graduated. There are lots of sick, uneducated people in college.
2. We have sick, uneducated people for a number of reasons but a big one is irreasonable and unprepared parents having children that they can't provide for. Mismanagement of banks and other loan institutions created the housing-bubble mess. Pressured by mostly Dems since 1977 (when the CRA act passed), banks and S&Ls gave out housing loans (sub-prime loans) to those folks who couldn't afford to pay them back.
When questioned about the obvious problems with this, Barney Frank, et al stated there were no problems with subprime loans.

The Republicans have run the State Legislature for how many years? Instead of putting away money in the Rainy Day Fund, they kept cutting taxes over and over again. Nobody likes taxes, but we pay little here in Arizona as compared to other states. If we had socked away more money in the Rainy Day Fund, Jan Brewer wouldn't be gutting healthcare for children and education funding.
I guess I am one of those awful liberals who think children should get to see a doctor for preventative care or when they are sick. I also think money spent on education is a worthwhile cause.

I live in the state of Reality. Since the beginning of time humans have received the health care they can afford. The rich got all the health care in the world. As your income goes down so does the amount of health care you can receive go down. I have told my pet birds "you are no different than me, stay healthy or die". Canadians have to wait some time for health care? In America the reality is the poor wait forever for care and die. The VA for health care? My best friend's husband, a retired soldier, died of cancer because the VA would not run the tests to find out what was wrong until he got VERY sick, and it was too late. How different is that from the health care for profit plans you can sign up for? So it seems to me nothing in history has changed health care, make a lot of money and you will get good health care. Be poor and get none. I make no complaints about it, I live in Reality.

The one thing this govt can give is every child all the tools they will need as the are our future! 84. The problem is that the goverment is not paying for anything. The taxpayers are. And those parents that can't provide for their children expect the taxpayers to provide for them.Read to your child. Challenge your child. Your child will go to school and be way ahead of the game.
Get a job that has health care. Even if that means less of a wage, the bennefit to you and your child far outways the loss. If an employer doesnt offer health care and they can't attract employees because the employees demand health care, eventually the employeer will offer it or go out of business.
Either way you, the taxpayer are paying for health care. I pay for health insurance, my employer pays for health insurance therefore I make less of a wage, I pay taxes therefore I pay for other's health insurance. I just would like a break from paying taxes to an entity (the government) who is woefully inadequate at running education or health care.

Here's an update for everyone. The labels of conservative, liberal, democrat and republican are pretty much meaningless these days.
You look at the budget deficits that the "conservative"/republican president has given us year after year and it seems ludicrous to call out democrats/liberals for not being fiscally responsible.
Then you have the suposedly liberal/democrat Obama saying that religion should play a bigger part of government than most in his party.
All I am saying is that it is just stupid to attack one party or the other. Or one ideology or the other. You can only really attack one candidate or office holder.
In this case, as a Democrat, I think Brewer is being much more realistic than Napolitano concerning our statewide economic difficulties. Just as I think Obama will be better than Bush at handling the federal economic crisis.
Or am I only allowed to like the office holders of one party or the other?

Dozens of people who wait till the last day and insist on paying cash or writing a check for the registration..if they want to goto a window then they should be charged a $10 fee for that ability...the MVD cost the state tons in money to staff and run...along with AHCCS and DES....They need to modernize the technology to get folks in and out faster with issues...unemployment claims etc...

With the unemployment rate spiraling out of control, layoffs, budget cuts hard working people who once paid for their own health insurance that no longer have jobs because "we need to tighten our belt" It just goes from one budget to another. 96 continued, I have nothing against sports, in fact I love sports. I just happen to think that the owners of the teams should shoulder their own expenses. If those huge amounts of money that are used to subsidize the sports industry were used elsewhere that would go a long way towards balancing the budget. I find it quite appalling that the budget is always balanced on the backs of the people who can't defend themselves, the young and the poor, by cutting education and health care. One major difference between Janet Napolitano and Jan Brewer is that Janet Napolitano was twice elected by the voters of Arizona to serve as our governor.
Jan Brewer, on the other hand, was not elected to this post.
It seems to me that she is speaking as if the people of this state elected her. She is speaking as if we have actually given her permission to aggressively force her extreme ideology on us. And she does have this power, structurally speaking.
But she was not elected to the role she was in. (online forums, by the way, are not the same as democratic elections).
So myself personally, I would think that someone in that situation -- located as governor but not elected to the position, with an election coming up in a couple of years -- would be better off showing some humility and being positioned more to listen to the people of this state.
Instead, Ms. Brewer announces right away that she knows best, that her ideology is the best ideology, that she is going to use that ideology to govern, and that listening to us, the people of the state, is not a priority for her.
That's a lot of arrogance for someone who was not even elected to her post! Power without permission or accountability ... I suppose that's part of her ideology too?
I think it's a good thing that this is democracy and we have elections. This un-elected governor can't do this for more than 2 years without actually seeking the permission of the people. Given the mood of this nation and what is to come, I suspect that the 2010 elections won't go so well for her if she keeps this up.

Actually Michelle it sounds like Jan Brewer is saying to every goverment agency, "Times are tough, for the time being no Filet Mignon. We will have to do with Top Ramon and micromavable burritos. If and when times get better you will enjoy the ability to eat top sirloin. We can't put everything you want on the credit card because we will never be able to pay it off." That sounds perfectly acceptable to me.

I do not have kids, but as far as I am concerned the kids of this nation will be our future. and i am willing to pay a little extra to see that they get the best possible. Ken V, as you probably know this whole country is in the worse shape possible with people loosing there jobs left an right. now how do you expect these people to put food on the table or keep there homes much less figure out about heath care?? everyone needs help one time or another, and this is america. if we can give help, then why not??? and yes every parent should be reading to there children and doing what they can at home to prepare them for school. but if we tax payers can help with programs such as Head Start then why not!

Ask anyone from a socialist country what it's like to wait on line for months or years for "elective surgery" like having your gallbladder out. Ask them where they go to get the best healthcare in the world (the U.S.A.). Ask them what it's like to be told "At your age, we're not willing to treat you because it's too expensive". Now, ask yourselves whether Big Government has ever run a program without Big Red Tape.
We need a flat tax & get rid of the IRS.
We need to build facilities to house the mentally ill people using the Emergency Rooms like a homeless shelter or simply can't take care of themselves or comply with treatment.
We need a closed border. Only those with a job who can and do pay for an insurance plan (for health and autos) and come via legal channels can immigrate. And yes, it is okay to shoot drug runners.
We need a law that gives automatic minimum sentences to gang-related crimes. Death penalty for gang-related murder with no red tape. Keep a list of known gang members for this purpose.
We need to call graffiti vandalism and prosecute - not call it "art" or "forms of self-expression". These are gangs marking OUR neighborhoods as their turf. Nothing less.
Anyone over 14 who commits murder or other heinous crime should be tried as an adult.
Boarding schools for kids who are truant or drop out of school.
Higher education is for those who earn it by getting good grades in rigorous courses - not dumbed down classes. It is not a right. If you messed up in high school, prove your worth by paying for one class at a time in Community College while you work.
A government give away should be free depoprovera shots or sterilization procedure. If you have more kids than you can pay for, too bad. Deal with it yourself.

#11 Tom, no one will read this it is too late in the evening, but I will right this anyway.
you know I am almost 60, and have lived in Arizona all but about 4 months, not including a couple of vacations to California and such. When I was young we did not go to deep into Mexico, even when we lived within 5 miles of the border because my dad was afraid of the situations there. We went to Nogalas and Naco, but now I would not even go there.
But that is not the reason am writing. I was fortunate that I could work in the mines when I was in my late teens and that paid for me to go to University. I was fortunate that In worked for a big company and had health care.
But I will tell you, that things are different now, the state expects everyone to go into debt and supports nothing. If you want to go to college, the state does not help, but will sell your debt for student loans to the highest bidder.
As for medical care, let's just say that business get tax breaks but no incentives to take care of their employees.
So with that said, lets hope they stop thinking so much about bankers and more about people on the street, people working and doing no harm.

When I think of underfunded parks and rec, underfunded kidco, and all. it dose amaze me that the city funded a graffiti wall in down town Tucson. You really can't call that Rio anything.
Plus, I believe that the poorer the economy is the more of this graffiti trash you see, because the less kids have to do, the more gangs and crime increase.

Sara J. Fisher, a 21-year-old Reed College senior,hugged a friend for support before she entered thefast-food restaurant. Fisher, under a court order, hadcome to apologize for scrawling her four-letter graffitisignature, "Maul," on property throughout Portland.
"I know that I can never justify why I did what I did,"Fisher said, addressing members of the HawthorneBoulevard Business Association. "It was never myintention to hurt anyone. I wasn't thinking about the impactI'd have around the community. I think I idealized graffitias a way to put art on the streets."
Fisher, whom prosecutors described as one of the mostprolific graffiti vandals in Portland, remained composedthrough the 30-minute meeting that at times turnedconfrontational.
She said she didn't realize the hardship she had causeduntil after she was caught and arrested. She said she wassorry and would not do it again.
Fisher, who faced 44 counts of unlawful applying ofgraffiti, pleaded guilty to 20 counts under a negotiateddeal.
Wednesday's was the first of four community meetingsthat Fisher must attend to apologize for her crimes. Toavoid prison, she agreed last month to pay nearly $3,000in restitution to property owners, spend 400 hours on agraffiti cleanup crew and wear an electronic monitoringbracelet for 30 days to ensure she adheres to a nightcurfew at her Southeast Portland apartment. She alsodonated $5,000 to the city's anti-graffiti trust fund.
Property owners at Wednesday's meeting tried to makeFisher realize the damage and distress she had causedthem and the city. And many tore into Fisher's descriptionof graffiti as an expression of art.
"The one thing I want you to realize is when it's on myproperty, it's vandalism. That has no art value to me," saidJerry Otto, general manager of the Burgerville onSoutheast Hawthorne Boulevard.
Terre Macris, who owns an art gallery on SoutheastDivision Street, demanded to know why Fisher had toleave her mark on buildings under the cover of night,instead of on canvas.
"You know how many gallons of paint have been on mybuilding because of people like you?" Macris asked her.
Police contend Fisher was painting graffiti from Augustthrough Oct. 13, when she was caught scrawling "Maul"on a Union Pacific Railroad utility box under the MorrisonBridge. Removing graffiti from railroad boxes and carscosts thousands of dollars, said Tom Morrison of UnionPacific. It also endangers train crews who may interpret arailroad signal incorrectly because of the colored paint,Morrison said.
"Do you realize the potential danger?" Morrison askedFisher.
"No, I didn't realize that," she said. "And, I didn't realize alot of other things. That's why I'm here today to apologize.I'm sorry."
Some merchants were skeptical that Fisher was sincere,and Fisher admitted it was not her choice to addressthem.
"Getting caught allowed me the opportunity to look atwhat I've done from an outsider's perspective," she said."If I hadn't gotten caught, I probably wouldn't have beensorry."
Fisher, a psychology major, derived her four-lettersignature from Southeast Mall Street, where she lives. Sheleft it on buildings, bus stops, traffic signs, railroad cars,trucks, phone booths and trash bins. People responsiblefor graffiti are called "taggers."
Alyce Cornyn-Selvy, who teaches at Pacific NorthwestCollege of Art, said Fisher's apology seemed scripted.
"You're a psychology major, so you should understandmy question. What conversations were going on insideyour head while you're doing this? What age were you?"she asked.
Fisher responded, "I know you want me to say I was 12years old, and I was being silly. And I'm not going to saythat."
By the end of the session, Cornyn-Selvy was morefrustrated.
"I'm all for artistic expression. I teach it, for God's sake.But where is her thinking of what's right and wrong? Shedoesn't get it."

wow if only, i could remember what I wrote maybe I could figure out what I violated.
it was something like,
Right on Fitz, it is a shame when kidco, parks and rec, and other city services are cut, but city budget can be used to teach kids how to make graffiti and call it art.
i believe that the poorer the economy becomes the more graffiti we see, because parents are working harder and kids have less activities while gangs and such can bring them in.
oh, well and then I wrote that having this graffiti wall in the middle of Rio whatever really does not give the right impression to our visitors concerning Tucson.
This is more than I wrote before. We'll see if it is investigated also.

I view graffiti on way around my property. Have paint roller, will cover. Five gallons of outdoor paint is cheaper than several cans of spray paint and it covers a lot more.
After the three or four covering the taggers move on and don't come back. New ones, yes, old ones, no.

The local "art elite," the Tucson art establishment, even including a controversial artist like Fitz, come on strong against the graffiti artists.
NOT because their art is defective or poor grade, but because the guerrilla artists did not pay for their canvas; and oh yes I almost forgot...too young and inexperienced to be any good.
The criticism is economic, not substantive. But it is as passionate as professional jealousy can get -- vicious.
Frankly as a Tucson citizen who is NOT an artist, I am not impressed by any of the local artifacts that pass for "art" in our town. It is all very bland, as though it were the work of committees, which it is.
As for the gang bangers, they are like the Fascists of the art world. They should be held separate and treated separately from others of their generation who paint in a similar style.
That separate status was granted to artists in the thirties, why not now?

Maybe we can get some fiscal sense into this state. NO ONE, AND I MEAN NO ONE guaranteed that a person can/will/shall get a college education. Maybe we can get the legislature to revoke the ILLEGAL Lottery (and it is by the State's Constitution) as it is and will remain a form of GAMBLING and is being used for other purposes than what the voters intended (and I was not eligible to vote when it was instituted in this State and voted it down in the State I was.) With the removal of Ms. Napalitano and her 'liberal' agenda, we can get down to paying down the State's debt (I own some of it) and making taxes more 'fair'. I doubt that will happen, but maybe it will.

HOUSTON — Illegal immigrants are coming into Texas, but not from where one might think.
The rush is coming from Arizona, Oklahoma and other states — places that have recently passed tough new anti-illegal immigrant laws.
The two toughest measures are in Arizona and Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma statute, which took effect in November, makes it a crime to transport, harbor or hire illegal immigrants. Effective Jan. 1, the Arizona law suspends the business license of employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers. On a second offense, the license is revoked.
Anecdotal information seems to indicate that illegal immigrants are leaving these states in growing numbers.
"They're really tightening the screws," said Mario Ortiz, an undocumented Mexican worker who came to Houston after leaving Phoenix last year. "There have been a lot coming — it could be 100 a day."
In Tulsa, Okla., the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has estimated that 15,000 to 25,000 illegal immigrants have left the area. One builder estimated that 30 percent of the Hispanic work force left Tulsa.
"There's been a tremendous impact in Oklahoma City," said David Castillo, the executive director of the Greater Oklahoma City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "We've had several companies close shop and leave the state. Banks have called us and say they're closing 30 accounts per week."
Enrique Hubbard, Mexico's consul general in Dallas, said a dozen Mexican families from Oklahoma have applied for consular documents listing their new homes in the Dallas area. He expects more to arrive because jobs are available in north Texas.
Texas' reputation as a welcoming destination has experts predicting more immigrants will come to Houston and other cities in the state. Texas has not passed any statewide law targeting the employment of undocumented workers.
"Texas is still very much an entrepreneurial place, where you can find your place in this economy," said James Hollifield, a Southern Methodist University professor and migration expert. "It's not an immigrant's paradise, but if you work hard and keep your head down you can get ahead."
Ortiz, a native of southern Mexican state of Tabasco, said he left Phoenix eight months ago working 60 to 70 hours a week as a nursery worker. While now he can only pick up two to three days a week of yardwork and barely earns enough to send back to his family, he prefers to be in Texas.
"Here, they let you work. Over there, they won't. There is a lot of racism, but here there isn't — it's better," Ortiz said of Houston.

I went for my one day or one trial assignment today.

For me it was grand,,,why?

not because I was not picked but because I would have been fine with being picked.

I walked form 1010 e 10th to the court house on congress, I took many pictures, checked in early.. listened to the orientation, and waited, I was picked for a car thief jury, but many questions occurred that made me think about all the times my cars had been stolen or broken into, and it upset me. And if the police take you to trial, you must have so many other deals happening that the car thief is minor, put them all in jail///////.

#5 go take a good look at Bisbee not only the pit but the overburden piles.Then go look at Morenci thats even worse.On your way to Rosemonts look at the piles of overburden with the dust flying in the wind.I live in Willcox and when we finally got rid of P-D's smelter in Douglas we had clear skys.Now that Mexico is expanding its smelters our sky is hazy evey day.

The mining law of 1872 NEEDS TO BE REPEALED. The people who OWN the rights to State and Federal lands (THE PUBLIC) deserve a bigger percent of the PROFITS the mines make. I have been to Rosemont Junction on many occasions and it is a beautiful place. DON'T let the large corporations ruin it.

I know about mining, the company gets rich, the miners take the risk, the community is discarded like a beer can at the end, the government does the clean up, and in this case only foreigners make the big buck, and the copper goes to china......and so on. Did not live in Arizona all my life to not know this cycle.
Now I would like to see a few more citrus groves or cotton fields. The other two c's never distribute me. "I never picked cotton."

Hey Robert, we have built a nation and won wars on the back of the economic engine known as mining. If you can't grow it, you must mine it. Please let us know what areas of the country you consider not "pristine", since economic copper deposits exist everywhere in the US we should be able to mine where you designate.......get real. Arizona supplies over 60 percent of the copper consumed in the US (yes the US, and most of the rest is imported). Since mining in AZ is contributing $10+ billion a year to AZ's economy, it would appear that AZ is "reaping the wealth" from the mining companies as well. BTW I don't want $20 million of my tax money spent on a pipeline so that GV and Sah. can grow into bigger communities and tax the system even more. Let's spend $0, let Augusta pay for the pipeline, and reap the benefits to the economy they bring. Just say NO to Arizona becoming the nations' tourist trap.....

It's always amazing to me how ignorant some people can be. Everyone loves to bash mining but not the lifestyle. How nice would those new homes in GV be without there copper wiring and copper plumbing. Wouldn't matter much since no one would be driving out to their shacks without the mined resources required to build their car, or any American infrastructure for that matter.
As for the environmental impact, get a clue people and listen to someone that is educated on the subject. The US has the most restrictive laws regarding mining. If you force the mines out of the US, there goes your safety and your environmental accountability. Don't go thinking it's that easy to go elsewhere either. I'm sure many of you weren't paying attention in science class, but you can't dig a hole wherever you want and find copper, gold, coal, etc. Copper will be mined in southern AZ for hundreds of years.
Interesting that people cite Morenci as an example when it is currently being mined, has yet to be reclaimed, and in a place that wouldn't even be populated without the mine.
Don't criticize Giffords for realizing that business is good for AZ and AZ is a mining state. Maybe some of you should join the anti-gambling folks in Nevada too. Furthermore, since when did making an area national forest prevent mineral exploration, national park, that's another story.

#15 - Interesting that you are for citrus and cotton fields. Perhaps you forgot that we are in a desert and that those fields take up so much water that if they went away we would not have a water shortage and many of the lost riparian areas would be replenished.

With the reclamation laws in place now, it should be a non-issue

A hard rock open pit mine can never be economically reclaimed, especially one located on a slope at 4,500 ft elevation.
The only way to get at the ore is to use thousands of tons explosives, and move millions of tons of rock.
The ore is of such a low grade that real mining companies didn't want it.
The whole thing is a scam to sell the property.

number 27 you are right, I know mines, I remember those explosives shaking the whole town on a regular day. Ever see the opening to violent Saturday. so right.
As to that other comment about cotton and citrus and water. It's true but, the typical house on that property now uses almost the same water and all we received was more traffic. I miss orange groves and cotton bowls. "I never picked cotton"owls. "I never picked cotton"

I cried Thursday. My friends, a family member and business partners all lost their jobs. I've read all the other comments made on this subject, and want to remind the public that this isn't about subprime lending, greed or bad business practices. This is about the loss of jobs and the families that are being affected.
We need to remember that these are real people in our community who contribute to the purchase of goods and services. Has anyone considered the supplier who delivered the massive amounts of paper to First Magnus, or the copier technicians who were kept busy fixing the massive numbers of machines? What about the office cleaning staff who came in nightly to make sure the offices were presentable in the morning?
Everyone is trying to place blame. How about saying a prayer for all the families who have been touched by this tragedy?

my statement about that:
it's absolutely true. I just don't understand, but I speculate that most people over 50 either did not analysis the situation or did not have friends that died there. Some of them were just programed differently by propaganda at the time and just did not see the similarities, I suppose.
Unfortunately, the next problem that followed our exit from Viet Nam was huge nation debt and inflation. Which the current government has done nothing to prevent. Accountability is gone, criminals rule, and in 15 years they'll blame the Democrats for the problems and it all begins again.
PS, why did they have impeachment processes for Clinton's tryst, and not for Bush. His administration makes it own legal reality; as it moves on from mess to mess. He makes Nixon look like a great statesman and honest man. If it is this bad now compared to then, I hope the kids of today can remember history or it will only be worse in the future. Oh forget that, no child left behind means that no one will thinking in the future, but they know how to take or cheat a test. Well this rambling should end. Unfortunately the Bush propaganda machine seems to be working very well these days and has not ended.

Went to bisbee today, most wonderful. weed wacked talked with neighbors and an old friend.

let me exsplain, I took lots of pictres of agava's on the lot, the lines seem right.
will sare them on my google picas page, the weather was wonderful, the bugs were dense, but the bug spray worked.

meet rick lopez again, must look in a year book,, we were JV football managers together, he works for bisbee water, nice guy. Good to talk with. Talked about that old garden in front of my aprants house. They are putting in a new water line.

Weed whacked the cemetery plot also, there is now a notice saying you must have permit to add permanent fixtures to the land. Finally,

The house in front of the manje property is listed for 76000 but has been on the market for 5 months.

I am back now, enjoying my evening.

listened to npr, today: I did not know that 1 out of 3 Indian women on reservations are raped, but that few charges are pursued by the BIA and the FBI. This saddens me considerably. A woman died and identified her asaulters before her death, these men have never even been questioned, about this crime.

The new vertians recommendation from dole and cilaila were presented, the administration initially ignored the recommendations but by the end of the day said to begin work, about time, we must take care of our veterans. entitlement, bullshit, we are Americans, we should be entitled....childern, women, poor, rich, old, we are citizens.

"they volunteered to be in the military but did not volute er for poor leadership."

Finally Bob Dole is a good man, who could not fit into his time.

I decided to move the domains I own www.bisbeetour.com and www.bisbeewalk.com to a new service iXhosting. This has made me think over the deal as it is these days. I miss the internet of the late 1990's, everything was new and the BS games were less. for example, I listed a weather site recently called BISBEEWEATHER.com, within months and after I added a link to it, the format was changed and now it is a commercial site that does no real weather, just lists of pseudo bisbee web sites. OH well. And then there are cell phones, it is as if companies and pseudo businesses think they can take money without providing real service.
